#1984 WrestlingWars Mid-South TV 2/2/84, NJPW Junior Heavyweight bout, 2/3/84 A NWA World Title Bout 2/3/84
Before I begin the month of Febuary 1984,I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who has read this blog to this point. It is a labor of love for me! Leave a comment anywhere you may read this, feedback and discussion are welcome!
Mid-South Tv For The 1st week of Febuary 1984, The video links to Mid-South always list them as Thursday of the week, but they most likley were shown that weekend on television around the territory. ..... Odd to say this about Mid-South TV but not alot happened! The biggest news was the beginning of the Mid-South TV Title Tournament! In fact the main event of the show was the 1st first round bout Terry Taylor vs Buddy Landell. The match was ok, odd though to see these two men who 18 months later would be in the midst of a hot feud/program for NWA National Title in Jim Crockett Promotions! Taylor got the victory after a nice stiff looking flying forearm!....Other things of import on the show Hacksaw Duggan is out of the tournament due to an injury in a coal miners glove match vs Khursher Darsow. Darsow has a pretape with Watts were they show a clip of the match from OK City. Couple of odd things here Watts says that the match was so violent that Mid-south could not in good conscience show much of it! Then they show Duggan climbing the pole putting the glove on and smashing Darsow in the face twice! So what exactly could they not show?? Another thing Duggan had lost a loser leaves town match in Houston, a major Mid South Market, late in the previous month. So how was that explained in connection with this, confusing! Not to mention Watts says Duggan growing up on the east coast brought the Coal Miner's glove match to Mid-South...What??? Because when you picture coal mines you mind goes to NY state without fail...Ok Bill, whatever you say boss!... In other action also from OK City we see a clip of Butch Reed hurting JYD by wearing a football helmet and hitting him with several leaping tackles! The tape cuts off just as reed removes the helmet and starts swinging it at a prone JYD! ...There were also your normal squash matches on the show! Mid South used to tape several shows, I think 4, let me know if I'm wrong. Any way the crowd was kinda flat the whole show so it must have been the end of the night!https://youtu.be/Efd3sV7uX1w (Author's note I looked it up and Mid-South did 2 weeks of tv taping at a time. This Episode along with the next one was recorded on 2/1,so I have no idea why this show seemed so dead!
NJPW Junior Heavyweight bout 2/3/84 Dynamite Kid vs Davey Boy Smith(yes you read that right!) For the WWF Junior Title no less! This one started at breakneck speed! Less than a minute in Davey Boy hit three solid pinning combos by hitting the ropes super fast. 1st a flying body press, then a sunset flip then a flying crucifix all for near falls. The 4th time he went to the well Dynamite cut him off burying a knee to the midsection! What a series a minute in!... Davey gains control again after another dizzying set of counters and hits a beauty of an arm drag! He then hits a press slam, his running powerslam and his high delayed vertical suplex all in a row! DK still kicks out. DK takes over again and slaps Davey with his standing guillotine/abdominal stretch hold! That one looks like it hurts! DK tries his diving headbutt from the top, Davey rolls out of the way and the crash and burn as always was spectacular! Davey Boy eventually fires Dynamite to the floor runs back springs from the ropes and flies between the top/middle ropes to nail Kid with a beautiful Plancha!(Davey boy Smith and Plancha in the same sentence, wow!) When they make it back in the ring, Kid's nose was busted open, from the plancha I think. The finishing sequence was very good here, Davey goes for another crossbody but both men tumble backwards over the tope rope! As the 20 count continues by the ref in the ring Davey tries for a vertical suplex outside, Kid counters slips beside him and hits a good looking back suplex. Davey crashes on the mats and Kid hurries up and beats the count to get back in and win a beauty of a match by countout!, In a great display of how smart Japanese fans were/are the cheered this smart move the heel used to gain victory! Modern fans please watch this bout if you wanna see where todays style began! https://youtu.be/Oy5Atva6eP0
Match#3 NWA World's Heavyweight title bout Ric Flair vs America's Champion Chris Adams. Dallas TX 2/3/84 This is how NWA title bouts in the territory were done for 70 years! The champion had one job every night, regardless the town, crowd, or opponent. Make that guy the hometown hero look like he was 3 seconds or one move from winning the ten pounds of gold! I love this match It was simple, two really fine workers wrestled not much show to this. The NWA title was all the reason the fans needed to care! Flair got the crowd hot before the bell. He got on the house mic leered at Sunshine, Adams Valet and Said "Honey if you stay in that corner you will be the only woman in Dallas Texas not cheering for Ric Flair!" I am not going thru the match move by move, Adams did hit his superkick finisher but Flair got his foot over the bottom rope. Take note that flair didn't kick out thus keeping the move strong!, Small details make wresting believable kids! Finish went like this Adams hit a reverse flying bodypress of the top rope, Flair rolled thru ended up on top a got the three count! Clean not even a yank of the tights! This match was the kind of match on which champions used to be made! https://youtu.be/7o5z1h8Jpbg
