The All-time legendary ring announcer #HowardFinkel passed away today at 69 years old, after a long illness! Doing this daily blog of wrestling in the year 1984 I hear Howard's deep ringing baritone every day and I smile! He loved wrestling and was almost a one man Coliseum Video in the early days of that company! Let this sink in no matter your favorite wrestler or favorite era in wrestling. We all can close our eyes and hear his voice! What a legacy that is! ... Part 2 Mid-South House Show Houston TX, 2/10/84 Match #1 "Hacksaw" Butch Reed vs Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart In a nutshell this was just a damn well done "fight"! This match broke down miliseconds into it with both guys just rolling on the mat taking turns straight up choking the other man! "Anvil" forces Reed to the floor. When Jim finally lets Reed up on the apron. He brings Butch in with a slingshot spot over the ropes. Reed gains the upperhand soon after and sends Neidhart to the floor on the opposite side of the ring. The battle continues Reed hits a high knee and Anvil is sent to the floor once again! Reed follows this up with by piledriving Jim on the concrete! Paul Bosch doing commentary sounds truly horrified by this. Of course Neidhart comes up forehead gashed bleeding everywhere. Jim gets his head slammed into the post for good measure. After several More minutes of getting beatdown Neidhart turns the tide by sidestepping a Reed shoulder tackle and sending him out over the tope rope. Jim returns the favor and slams "Hacksaw" head 1st to the post. The people of Houston go crazy for this. This was, by the way a no Dq bout. After the post shot Niedhart runs around the outside of the ring and collars Reed with the seat of a steel chair. Butch is now bleeding! Anvil hits his Samoan Drop finish But Reed sticks a foot out over the rope! Reed gains controll and hits his flying shouldertackle off the ropes, but Jim returns the favor by putting his foot on the rope to break the count! Finish is simple but effective, like the match itself. Ref Checks on a slumpted down Anvil in one corner. Reed behind the ref goes for brass knuckes in his trunks. The ref turns spots him and while this is going Anvil puts someting in his hand(I think he faked this dont think he had anything in his fist but air) he gets out of his tights and knocks Reed cold with it to get the victory. Match #2 Terry Taylor vs Nikolai Volkoff This match was good although it had a completly different pact than the previous one. Taylor out quick Volkoff early. The big Russian took over pretty quick and put Taylor in a reverse chinlock/neck crank hold and that is where they stayed for actual minutes! This match took 15 minutes I have told you everything that happened! I cannot call any match boring or a bad match though when the crowd was this into it! They bought Terry Taylor as the never say die-fighting commie evil babyface in peril! When Terry did make his full comback causing Volkoff to stumble out over the top rope to the floor, the crowd popped. When Terry mounted him center ring a few seconds later and started reigning down puches the roof blew off of the place! People yelling and putting the Texas or American flag over their head in triumph! End came right after when Volkoff pressed Taylor over his head for his backbreaker. Terry wriggled free and hit an O'Connor roll for the pin. After the bell Volkoff attacked and tried to hang Taylor with a noose rope he carried. Match #3 Junkyard Dog Vs Khusher Darsow This bout is 12 and a half minutes long and Darsow does not get any real offense at all for the 1st 5 min! Dog punches, headbutts and howls his way thru it. He had the crowd in his hands! Darsow finally is allowed a tiny bit of heat after raking the yes to escape a Dog bearhug! Darsow hooks on a front facelock and they sit in it.......and they continue...Dog fights out Darsow punches him back down, repeat! JYD eventually "Dog's up? And no sells Darsow blows. In the middle of his comback dog hooks in an abdominal stretch(what the hell)?.... Dog lets go of the hold, Hits a big ole soup bone clothesline, Then he hits his "THUMP" powerslam finish and beats Darsow clean with it! He howls the fans go nuts. Dog shakes the hand of ref and boss'es son Joel Watts and leaves! Worth seeing so you know how over Dog was. https://youtu.be/yLDkF6MtIx4
Match #4 Mid-South tag team title bout Mr. Wrestling II/Magnum TA vs Jim Cornette's Midnight Express! You have to see this match to believe it! The Midnights come dame close to causing a full on riot! The started much more slowly than their 1st match 2 weeks previous. With Mr Wrestling II being a one man army with his million dollar knee left laying waste to both Bobby and Dennis multiple times! The crowd was just a constant roar thru the 20 minute match! When the Express got control they put Magnum in a hamerlock and quick tagged and cheated to perfection! Once II made the hot tag is when all hell really broke lose. II hits Eaton with a soul moving Knee lift. As he goes for the cover with the ref on the other side of the ring with Ta and Dennis. cornette throws powder in II's face from outside! Magnum runs around and gets up on the apron. He gets knocked backwards of the apron and gets his leg tied in the top rope. Magnum is hanging upside down by his foot helpless! Bobby and Dennis grab Jimmy's tennis racquet and are wearing out a blind wrestling II. Meanwhile Cornette takes off his belt and starts to whip him half to death! ....They get on the house mic and say to not throw things in the ring! Every cop in the bulding is standing looking tense! Paul Bosch runs down grabs Cornette from behind,(I've heard Corny tell this story) and tells him you cannot do this in Houston they(the Fans) will kill you! Cornette goes in and you can see him tell Dennis something and point to Bosch! The crowd erupted when Paul grabbed Cornette! On the video you can hear somebody say"The old man got him"!
